I'm going to Vermont for christmas with my girlfriend and her family for skiing, snowmobiling, and general winter tom-foolery and I was looking into getting a pair of touch screen compatible ski gloves. Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't want to spend $100 on gloves, but I also don't want to be freezing. Plus I have a LifeProof phone case so I'll definitely be using my phone to take pictures and whatnot so touchscreen compatibility would be ideal.
Come to think of it, I don't even have gloves at all, other than my driving gloves, so this is definitely something I'll need to pick up for the trip.
I also had to get snow boots for this trip. Imagine that. I've lived in Connecticut all my life and haven't had a pair of snow boots or serious winter gloves for at least the last three years. What the hell have I been doing?
Also I've never been skiing before so I might die.
Have some snow hoonage as thanks!

Just put some thermal paste on the fingertips of glove that you already like. Instant touchscreen gloves.

"touch screen compatible"
"ski gloves"
pick one.
no seriously. any glove that is made to actually keep you hands warm while skiing isnt going to do jack on a touch screen.
any glove that is meant to work is a touch screen simply isnt up to the rigors of skiing.
you cant have both. not in THAT price range. (as an aside, my 90$ dakine gloves are AWESOME for skiing.
not these exactly, but VERY similar)

I've never found a pair that were warm enough for a full day of skiing and had enough dexterity. I have a cheap pair that act like glove liners under better gloves. Still have to remove the outter glove, so that's a pain...better than removing and having bare skin! My fiancé bought a $70 northface pair and they aren't warm enough to actually wear for a while (in my opinion).

Is that case going to keep your phone from dying super fast in the cold? I've never kept my phone on me while I ski, but my friends' phones and cameras always died too quickly to even be worth having the fancy gloves.
If so, get cheap glove liners with the touchscreen things and then nice ski gloves or mittens to go over them. Not sure what mountain you're going to but skiing in Vermont is generally windy, icy, and very cold so you'll want the extra layers. And handwarmers.
EDIT: I just remembered there's a ski/snowboard subblog now if you'd like me to share to PowderForward as well.

I'm a pretty good skier so let me give you some advice:
1. The faster you go, the more in control you will be.
2. Try not to turn at all. Just go in straight lines.
3. Keep your legs as far apart as possible. Ideally there should be like 4 feet in between your knees.
4. Use your poles one at a time, left, right, left, right.

Oh! I hadn't thought of that. Touch screen glove liners might be the way to go. A lot of the sub-$100 touchscreen gloves I've seen are either not beefy enough or have reviews saying they aren't warm enough. It would be worth it to by a good pair of regular ski gloves and get liners though. That way I could just wear the liners around town when it's chilly. My hands don't get super cold, but New England winters are not super friendly to bare skin.

MylesD suggested touchscreen glove liners. That might be the way to go. I don't mind the hassle of taking an outer glove off for a moment, but I would prefer not to be out in the cold with bare hands for longer than necessary. And thanks for the suggestion! I'll look into those.

Interesting. I didn't know that trick. Thanks!

Thanks! A buddy of mine is an amazing skier and he offered to take me up to Mohawk (little mountain in CT. Nothing special at all, but it'll do the trick for practice) a couple times the week before I go to Vermont so I have some idea of what I'm doing.

Agreed. Investing in the ski gloves is the best idea and they'll last a pretty long time. I bought a nice Dakine pair back in 2005 for around 120 (I think) and they're still going strong after all these years. You could probably spend half of that now. Oh, and make sure they have a wristguard of some sort because you'll definitely be falling on your first ski trip and (when you're tumbling down the mountain) snow enters any crack it can find. God speed.

thats more or less what you will have to do. personally, I dont use my phone that much while skiing, so it doesnt matter to me.
Dakine is a pretty good go-to brand so action stuff. they are med-to-high end gear for the most part. any 1/2 decent ski/snowboard shop should have them

I have no idea. I hadn't thought of that. My jacket has an insulated pocket made for your iPod/phone so here's hoping that'll help. My inner hipster just really wants something good to post on Instagram. Ahaha.
Someone else suggested touchscreen glove liners as well. That sounds like it might be a good way to go. I will definitely have plenty of hand warmers. My girlfriend's mom is basically cold blooded (to the point where she got an electronically warmed jacket and ski pants so she can ski for more than an hour) and knowing her she will have enough handwarmers to supply a German army during an attempt to take over Russia in the winter.

I want to be perfectly clear:
Don't do any of those things I said.

I'mma be honest. I just clicked for the snow hoonage. Sorry op

You know I'm tired when all of those rules made me squint my eyes in confusion and it literally did not even register as sarcasm.
I need sleep.

Don't worry, I won't hold that against you. This post may or may not have partially been an excuse to post those gifs. I could have just asked my girlfriend. She would have had an answer to this question.

Rules 1-3 are bad ideas and you might (probably) get hurt.
Rule 4 though, you can try. Boy will you look goofy though.

I might have to try rule number 4 now just for the hell of it... I don't have a problem looking like the fool I really am.

You should. And scream LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT each time you use an arm lol.
![]() 12/02/2014 at 21:38 |

It might be even better if I scream left and right every time I use the opposite arm.
If I'm going to try to look stupid, I might as well go all out!

I think you are right.
Do it.

dude. Just buy a stylus.
My favorite is a pen/stylus/ruler/Philips/flathead/level.

And this is why I asked the internet. I would have literally never thought of that on my own.

Fear not, touch screen compatible gloves do exist, and at reasonable prices. Burton's newer glove lines have "Screen Grab" on them, basically you can use your phone without taking off your glove like you would with e-tip liners. And since they're Burton you'll be able to find them at just about any Snowboard retailer, especially if you're in Vermont.

You can also buy some silver string ir aomething like that (I cant remember exactly what it is called but it is string with some silver) and sew it ontovyhe end of a finger or two of any glove. Much cheaper.

I definitely will!
I've been meaning to get into some snow sport for a while now. My brother snowboards and started bugging me to come with him last year, but for some reason that never happened. Now I've come to realize that the majority of my friend group skis and bunch snowboard, so it's about time. I honestly haven't been this nervous/excited to learn something new since I first started driving.

Haha, skiing is a little easier than snowboarding to pick up. Either way you'll have a blast with it. I've also made you an author over there so you can share how it goes.

Thanks, man. I'll make sure to take a few pictures and do a write up about my first experience.

Should I get a notification when granted authorship? Nothing has popped up yet and PowderForward isn't showing up on my blogs. I swear my Kinja account eats authorship privileges. Apparently I've been given authorship to Groupthink, Truck Yeah, and the Photography blog (twice) and yet I still can't post to any of them.
C'mon Kinja. Cut me some slack.
